Though FNAC(fine needle aspiration cytology) of the breast is a useful diagnostic too of the breast lesions false-negative results invariably occur and can detract from the technique's usefulness. The false-negative rates vary considerably
between
series, with a range of 0.7 to 22.0% quoted in the literature. Several factors contributing to false-negative results have been reported and include proficiency of the aspirator, experience of the pathologist, and factors of the lesion including
small
size, palpability, paucicellularity, special-type histologic factor, At the present time, there are a few controversies concerning the use of FNAC for definite diagnosis of the breast cancer without open biopsy.
We had experienced 4 cases of false-neagtive result for 6 months from Oct. 1994 to Mar. 1995. We consider the limit of FNAC as diagnostic tool of breast cancer with the literature.
